What mud season actually does to a dog yard
From the first thaw through about May, a Utah back yard cycles between frozen, wet, and mud. Grass has no chance in that window. It is dormant and the ground is soaked. Every trip outside brings some of it back through the door.
A dirt run is worse. A grass run worn down to dirt by the same three paths is the same thing with extra steps.
Turf on a real drainage base changes the surface you are dealing with. Snowmelt goes down through the turf and out through the base. It does not stand on top and turn the top inch into mud.

Pet turf installation, and the honest part about odor
Here is the part most companies skip. We will say it plainly.
Turf does not get rid of odor by itself. A good build drains liquid down and out fast. It does not hold it at the surface, which is where smell comes from. That, plus rinsing the run down now and then, is what keeps it clean. In warm months that is more often. In winter it is less.
So here is the honest expectation. This is a surface you rinse, not one you never think about. It is far less work than a mud yard and a lot cleaner than a worn-out grass run. It does not need re-seeding after the dogs tear it up every spring. But if someone tells you a turf run is zero upkeep and never smells, ask them what they are basing that on.

Not if it is built and kept up right. Odor comes from liquid sitting at the surface. The fix is a base that drains it down and away fast, plus rinsing the run down now and then. We will walk you through the drainage build on the assessment. We will be straight with you about how often you will want to rinse it. Anyone who tells you a dog run never needs rinsing is selling you something.
